Montana Folk Dance

Welcome to a Montana celebration of world dance!

About IFD

International Folk Dance draws on traditional music and dances from countries all across Europe, Central Asia and North Africa. Different groups tend to focus on certain regions over others, but you'll almost always find a healthy mix of dances from Scotland, Ireland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Israel, Macedonia, Turkey, and more.

Groups in Montana

Wherever people love to dance, you find dance groups. Currently, active groups meet at varying frequencies in Butte, Bozeman, Helena, and Kalispell. If you know of others, please let us know!

Multi-Group Events

Our primary event is the annual Steam and Stomp, hosted by the Helena Group in February, which brings dancers to Boulder Hot Springs (halfway between Butte and Helena) for a weekend of teaching, learning, sharing, a LOT of dancing, and soaking in hot water.

This Website

This page is your gateway to sites maintained independently by each of the separate Montana groups, as well as an information center for inter-group activities. If you have an event to share with all of us, please contact the webmaster.

If you're viewing this site with Netscape 4, or a handheld device, you're seeing a pretty plain site. Our main goal is for you to be able to view all the pertinent information. However, you'll find a more aesthetically pleasing presentation (we think) if you use a more recent desktop browser. Any browser based on Mozilla's Gecko engine -- including Netscape 6, Camino, Phoenix, K-meleon, and of course Mozilla -- will work very well. So will Opera 6 and Safari. And if you insist on using Internet Explorer, try to get a version later than 5.5 (for Windows) or 5.0 (for Mac - probably your best option if you're running MacOS 8).
